Our Story
Mariya and Rohit met on Thanksgiving Day, 5 years ago on a frosty day at the Chicago’s Christkindlemarket – a Chicago classic rendezvous place for young hearts. Shortly after, having quickly discovered a common love for adventure, the two embarked on their very first trips around the country – from Disney World to Sedona, Grand Canyon to the Indiana Dunes, and Lake Geneva in Wisconsin. The first months following the chilly first date became a warm connection and a budding relationship.
A few months later Rohit was moving to Boston for his fellowship. Rohit convinced Mariya to date him long-distance, confident that life had a plan for the two of them. What soon followed was a myriad of biweekly flights from Chicago to Boston, and Boston to Chicago.
The couple continued their long-distance relationship, often crossing the distance together to even more amazing locations – India, Singapore, Bali. Still, the two lived in two different cities, and with the demands of the work as they were, it seemed impossible to find a way to be in the same place for more than a week at a time… until a global pandemic that turned the world upside down shined its small silver lining.
Shortly after the stay-at-home order, fearful that they wouldn’t be able to see each other for a while, Mariya packed a carry on and moved to Boston to weather the pandemic together with Rohit. What started as a two-week lockdown stay, turned into a beautiful year of living together, which Rohit used to meticulously plan a special proposal.
Rohit enlisted Mariya’s sister and parents, to help him orchestrate an unforgettable proposal, which characteristic of these two, would take place in another corner of the world. On September 2nd, 2021, Mariya said “Yes!” at the top of mount Hoverla, the highest mountain located in the heart of the Ukrainian Carpathians. Needless to say, they are beyond happy about the future together, and are thankful for their first date on that chilly November day in Chicago.
Mariya and Rohit couldn’t be more excited to celebrate with their closest family and friends in 2022 in their home countries, Ukraine and India.
Rohit and Mariya met on Thanksgiving Day in 2016 at the Christmas market. During their interesting conversation, she learned that Rohit was planning on moving to Boston for his fellowship. Mariya felt that it would be a barrier for a successful long-term relationship, and they decided to remain friends. Over time, the friendship grew into a strong bond and they both very much enjoyed each other’s company.
Mariya and Rohit took several trips together, staring with Disney World, Sedona and Grand Canyon, Indiana Dunes, and Lake Geneva during that period. On his drive from Chicago to Boston for his fellowship, Rohit realized that he couldn’t imagine not having Mariya in his life, and he actively persuaded her to consider dating him.
Mariya was already very fond of Rohit, so she was happy to give it a chance. This began her flying from Chicago to Boston almost biweekly. The couple did several hiking and skiing trips, but that year was very busy for Rohit to get much free time.
After Rohit was done with his fellowship, he and Mariya took several amazing trips that started with Asheville NC, Toronto, Niagara Falls, India, Singapore and Bali.
The couple very much enjoyed spending time with each other and exploring new activities and places, but each found great value in their work at their existing city and the move to one location was almost impossible to happen.
Then COVID happened, and Mariya was able to work remotely and she immediately packed her carry on and traveled to Boston, for what she thought would be maximum of two weeks! Rohit spent almost a year trying to find a perfect plan on how to propose.
Rohit enlisted Mariya’s sister and parents to help him plan the proposal and realized his plan at the top of the highest mountain in Ukraine.
Mariya and Rohit are very happy and excited about the future together. They have recently started sailing, playing tennis, and taking dance classes. Next they are looking to get back to their forgotten musical skills and share further adventures and make new memories together!
